When your child comes across a word that they cannot read, encourage them to use their phonics knowledge by isolating the different phonics sounds and ‘trapping’ them between their fingers, before blending these phonemes together. Tackling individual sounds is much easier than reading whole words and the process of working it out for themselves will really improve their confidence!
If you find that your child struggles with a particular sound then find a way of making that sound ‘stand out’. For example here is the ‘oa’ sound being practiced with a beautiful drawing of a bOAt!
