What are Psycho-Educational Assessments?
Our psycho-educational assessments are highly sought-after because they provide a detailed roadmap to a child’s strengths and areas of need. They are comprehensive, insightful and useful for the child’s near and distant future. Because such assessments identify areas of particular strength, parents and teachers can optimize the child’s gifts. Similarly, by identifying the areas which require improvement, parents and teachers can help the child acquire compensatory or alternate skills. Areas which are examined during a psycho-educational assessment include the child’s cognitive, developmental, emotional, social and behavioral skills. We are able to assess children as young as 2.5 years of age to 16 years of age.
The assessment process usually consists of an initial consultation. This initial meeting provides the opportunity for parents and psychologist to candidly discuss vital background information. Thereafter traditional and/or play-based assessment sessions are conducted with the child at the psychology center. Sometimes, a school observation (where necessary) is also conducted to understand the child’s current school functioning. This assessment phase can require the child to meet with the psychologist for several sessions. Finally, the results and a detailed report are discussed with the parents. Part of this report also includes an action plan, which details recommendations in terms of further support, diagnosis (if applicable), interventions, teacher and parenting strategies amongst other things.
If you think that your child could benefit from and assessment or that such a detailed roadmap would help you better understand your child, do not hesitate to contact the VAPC on 6235-9602 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
